Summer is finally here and with it comes poolside hours and long weekends in the sand, surf, and sun. To me this desperately highlights two things: 1. Without exception, I need to hightail it to the gym and burn off some of this winter fat and… 2. I need a new bathing suit, preferrable an eco-friendly bikini.

Just what is an eco-friendly bikini and how is wearing a bikini green, you ask? Well, it minimizes the needs for big factories to produce large bolts of fabric and reduces transportation weight, minimizing transportation fuel and CO2 being expelled into the atmosphere and contributing to the acidification of the oceans, just getting the garment to me! Plus it doesn’t take much energy or soap to wash it!

So this year, I thought I should try some of the more eco-friendly bathing suit lines, eco-friendly bikinis, green swimwear and beach totes, and found some stylish, comfortable options that still keep my carbon footprint at its smallest.

Check out some of these green bathing suit lines this summer and make sure to wear your sunscreen as you are reducing your carbon footprint!  Maybe a fashionable sun hat as well.

Top of my suggested list is to check out Ecouterre for some of this summer’s hottest bikini and beachwear styles. All sustainable, sexy, and smart for an eco-trendy summer by the water. According to a recent article in Ecouterre, When it comes to the polemical slogan tee, nobody does it better than Katharine Hamnett. The London-based designer, who’s been doling out wearable catchphrases like “Choose Life,” “No War,” and “Use a Condom” since 1983, is teaming up with online retailer Yooxygen to hawk another well-timed statement: “Save the Sea,” a 14-piece collection of ecologically minded one-piece swimsuits, bikinis, trunks, coverups, and beach totes.Green your swimwear and save the sea

Meadow – With the mantra, “live free – be eco chic” Meadow (that’s right, her name is Meadow) keeps things eco-conscious and trendy. All of her designs are made in the U.S.A. (in Miami). She works with sustainable materials like bamboo, organic cotton, recycled fabrics and soy. Even better, they give back to the global community. Last year they planted 2000 native hardwood trees in Costa Rica and this year they are working with Tremendous Miami – a non profit that plants trees for the community.

Loyale – High fashion Loyale’s bikinis are made from 100% organic cotton and low impact dyes. Featured in Vogue’s green issue, Loyale has become one of the more fashionable eco-trends of this swimsuit season.
